If you're not confident in a horse to win, but think they have a good chance of placing, each-way betting can be a smart strategy. Each-way betting involves placing two bets on the same horse: one for the horse to win, and another for the horse to place (usually in the top two, three, or four, depending on the number of runners and the bookmaker's terms).

If your horse wins, both bets pay out. If your horse places, your place bet pays out at a fraction of the win odds (usually 1/4 or 1/5, depending on the bookmaker). This means you can still make a good return even if your horse doesn't win.

Each-way betting is particularly useful in races with a large field, where the chances of any one horse winning are lower. It's also a good option for longer distance races, where there's a higher likelihood of horses placing.

Of course, as with any betting strategy, there are risks involved. It's important to assess the form of the horses, the track conditions, and any other relevant factors before placing your bets.
